San Clemente Clean Ocean Fee

Gets Voted on in September

Okay, gang…let’s all vote for the Clean Ocean Fee to be extended when we get our ballots in the mail in September.

Under the existing San Clemente Clean Ocean Provision, extant since 2002, each household gets assessed a fee of from $3.51 to $5.02 per month.

The funds cover costs of handling our storm run off water and creating public awareness of things like not washing your car outdoors where the water runs into public road drains, proper street sweeping, treatment of residential water from sprinklers, etc. and education of residents.

Without the fee, penalties would draw $2 million a year from city recreational and other programs.  To learn more, go to the City of San Clemente or call

The San Clemente Times does a great job.  It has terrifically
condensed news of San Clemente consisting mostly of news
that you can use…REALLY useful san clemente news.

I like the frequent in-depth, analytical articles, too,
like the one in the August 1 issue on the Casa Romantica,
“The Jewel of San Clemente,” and the most valuable piece
of real estate in the city.

As Ole Hanson’s original home here, high on a cliff
overlooking San Clemente’s famous pier bowl and pier,
nears its 80th birthday, it was a most timely story
and I am sure many city residents cut it out and saved it.

My wife, Debbie Ferrari, has her ads in this paper and
we get excellent response from it.  We are currently
running the ads about www.RealtyCares.com a means to
support San Clemente non-profit groups by sharing Debbie’s
real estate commissions with them.

But we also run the comic strip series where cartoon
characters comment in the story board frames about what
a good realtor Debbie Ferrari is.

We also have a San Clemente real estate red banner running in rotation with two other

best multi-tasker we’re ever seen at a publication and

ads that we run.

Ever hear of the Vial of Life Project? Neither did I until today, but it makes so much sense that I cannot imagine why it never came up before.

Seniors who succumb to any number of illnesses, maladies, conditions or injuries sometimes become unconscious before they are discovered. Energency Medical Technicians with fire departments and other organizations in San Clemente and throughout the U.S. are trained to look for the “Vial of Life” in the patient’s refrigerator.

The vial contains info about the Senior’s prescriptions, medical conditions, doctor’s contact info, and the location of other vital documents, such as living wills and orders for do-not-resusitate.Why not help YOUR beloved Senior create a Vial of Life? Just get an old prescription bottle, glue or tape a white strip around it, and label it, VIAL OF LIFE. Large RED lettering is preferred.

Help the Senior gather his vital information, and help him condense and synopsize it, and then put it into the vial. It helps EMT people find the vial if you use tape or a magnet to affix a note on the front of the refrigerator saying VIAL OF LIFE INSIDE.

As a South Orange County Realtor who has an 85-year-old mother, I suggest that you do this service for every senior that you know, especially those at the San Clemente senior center and at the new San Clemente Dorothy Visser Senior Center coming soon.

VIALS OF LIFE FOR EVERYONE IN THE FAMILY, TOO

Furthermore, I suggest that you create a Vial of Life packet for your children, and everyone in your own immediate family. Make a Vial of Life for each person, using these guidelines, and be sure you have a vial for your car’s glovebox, too, for each person.

Closer Source for Monterey Cypress Trees

To Plant in San Clemente - (Go Green!)

Our friend, Michael Kaupp, who chairs San Clemente’s planning commission, is president of the Downtown Business Association, (DBA), and owns a giant downtown antique mall called Stanford Court, believes in planting trees. In fact, he has planted more than 500 trees since he began the plantings some years ago.

This last Earth Day, Michael and volunteers planted about 20 Monterey Cypress trees, with 10 of them being at the local San Clemente Boys and Girls club. Often, Michael Kaupp’s plantings replace eucalyptus trees that have died and been cut down in town.

Over the past few years eucalyptus trees were killed all over California by either a parasite, horned borers, or tortoise beetles .

Michael is looking for a Southern California supplier of 100-gallon Monterey Cypress trees ready to plant here. Currently he has to go all the way to Santa Barbara to get these small trees that are ready for planting.

Look Down the List and Learn the Meanings

of Many Spanish Words Used in

San Clemente, “The Spanish Village by the Sea.”
Because Ole Hanson, the founder of San Clemente, wanted this town to be “The Spanish Village by the Sea,” he insisted that all streets have Spanish names. Now this DOES make the city more “Spanish,” I suppose, but it drives visitors and newcomers from the Eastern States crazy.

Because I, in my role as Realtor Debbie Ferrari, sell San Clemente real estate I see more out-of-towners than most people who live here do.

So, to help everyone out a bit, here are some San Clemente Spanish words that we see all the time around town and that we’ve translated for you.

We’re Having our Own local

San Clemente “Dancing With the Stars”

Six well known local San Clemente personages will be competing in a dance contest on May 19 to help find money for new cardiology machines at Saddleback Memorial Medical Center. The event takes place at the Marbella Golf and Country Club in San Juan Capistrano. The dancers are gathering pledges from members of the community and as of this date, have already exceeded $10,000 in contributions.

Contestants include the medical doctor/Internist/MD that my husband, Bill Koelzer and I go to, Dr. Steve Cullen of San Clemente Internal Medical Group: Adele Lux, owner of Adele’s Restaurant in the San Clemente Inn; Tony Carbonara, owner of Carbonara’s Italian Restaurant; Ernie Redmond, Dentist; Sandra Grifman, Psychologist, and Bob Burns, a certified financial planner with AG Edwards.

Each contestant dances with a professional dance partner, just like on the TV show, “Dancing with the Stars” does.

While the contestants mostly compete for the resulting wide public awareness of their businesses, the glory and the number of drinks that people might buy them if they win. There is even talk that practice sessions or a rebroadcast of the dance contest may air at some time on public access TV channel 30 for all of South Orange County to see.
Contestants can also win prizes. These include a trip to the Hilton Hawaiian Village, or a timeshare stay in Lake Tahoe, Mammoth, or Big Bear.

Contestants are fitting in as many practice sessions as they can with their dance instructor partners.
