Casa Romantica

Every community needs a heart,

a vital place to gather, to grow and

to celebrate the richness of its

culture, history, and people.

South Orange County  historic treasure,

Casa Romantica is that place. “

(In 1969, an event occurred which accelerated the growth and reputation of San Clemente. In that year former President Nixon purchased a Spanish mansion in the southern part of town that Hamilton Cotton had built in 1927.

This “Western White House” became the site of numerous historical meetings.  However, that home is in private hands now and has nothing to do with the Casa Romantica.)

The Casa Romantica home is primarily historic because it was the home of Ole Hanson, the founder of San Clemente circa early 1920s. He is revered here, was a former Mayor of Seatle, and a very sharp dude, though he won and lost several fortunes. Still, he was blessed with incredible vision.

In 1927, Hanson built the Casa Romantica as his family home, and expression of his version of the California dream. The seven-bedroom, seven-bath house was designed by Carl Lindbom, who also designed La Casa Pacifica (the former Western White House).

The villa sat vacant for years, crumbling.

Then, a few years ago, when some firm wanted to turn it into YET ANOTHER Mexican Restaurant, concerned citizens in the city went nuts and said NO!

My good friend, the Mayor Emeritus and current city councilman,Wayne Eggleston, plus Guy Varianno, and a big bunch of others in the community got busy.

Minor early roles were played by me, Realtor Debbie Ferrari and my husband, Marketing and Publicity Consultant, Bill Koelzer—-We went out and started raising money,

($1 million was anonymously donated by someone, too) to start the refurbishing project.

Now the renovation is well underway after many more citizen donations, with more coming every day.

Wayne headed the Heritage of San Clemente Foundation which had a lot to do with the preservation and renovation of the Casa Romantica Villa as an historical home and cultural center instead of becoming “Taco Romantica”.

The Foundation STILL raises funds for the Casa as well as for the Marine Monument project’s maintenance at Park Semper Fi. Wayne was the visionary leader for that beautiful park and statue just down the cliff from Casa Romantica, a tribute to Marines and our armed forces everywhere.

Debbie Ferrari and Husband Bill Koelzer

My husband, Bill Koelzer, and me, San Clemente Realtor Debbie Ferrari, on the pier.

Each mid-July the San Clemente Ocean Festival draws 40,000 to 50,000 visitors from all over Southern California.

I love them coming here, because they get to see how beautiful our San Clemente city is, and ideally, they’ll do as I did 20 years ago, and buy San Clemente real estate here.

I even got my picture taken with King Neptune:

Debbie Ferrari with King Neptune at San Clemente Ocean Festival

King Neptune is my neighbor, Ed Howie, who is also Santa Claus in Dec.

And what San Clemente city festival would be fun WITHOUT our good friend, Computer and Internet expert, Hilarie Sellers, shown below with the San Clemente south beach behind her.  See all the folks!

Debbie Ferrari’s Friend, Hilarie Sellers

I think it’s just great being a Prudential California Realty Broker Associate who finds San Clemente realty for people who move here, or young people who are just tired of renting and want to get into a home of their own.

If you’re thinking of owning some Orange County real estate soon, be sure to call me because I JUST LOVE BUYERS.

San Clemente pier bowl

OUR BEAUTIFUL PIER BOWL AND PIER FROM WHICH THEY SHOOT OFF THE FIREWORKS!

Wow!–Fireworks from the lofty perch of Park Semper Fi…the BEST viewpoint in San Clemente.

Wayne Eggleston and Marine Major General Michale Lehnerd

Wayne Eggleston and Major General Michael Lehnert, Commanding General,
Marine Corps Installations West, stationed at Camp Pendleton. Read about his brilliant career at: http://tinyurl.com/5txk75 .

I just noticed in his career bio that he graduated from Central Michigan University which is where my husband, Bill Koelzer, San Clemente Publicity Consultant did his first semester of college before finishing up in CA at San Jose State.

Mayor Emeritus Wayne Eggleston, brought six of us catered food, tables, chairs, etc. and a full meal. Thanks, Wayne! Deb and I brought junk food. What a GREAT Fireworks show directly above the pier from where they shoot the fireworks.

Above is retired, 22-year City Clerk, Myrna Erway (see video of her there at: http://youtube.com/watch?v=umQPIHqisKA ) were there and Lynn Wood, Chamber head, too, plus City Police Chief Paul. All active or retired military family members were invited.

I am truly stunned to see how very many real estate and social blogs and web sites my husband, Orange County Marketing and publicity Consultant, Bill Koelzer, and I are in now.  Just take a look…the total sneaks up on you as you appease friends and do them a favor and join THEIR social networking sites.

But, hey, it is also a lot of fun to meet new people online and for me, can even be a good way to keep my ear to the ground about Orange County real estate and realty news in my home town of San Clemente.

Assistance League Christmas Home Tour

San Clemente, CA — The Assistance League® of Capistrano Valley (ALCV) presents its third annual Christmas Home Tours on Sunday, December 7, 2008, from 11:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M.

The self-guided tours present beautiful homes in South Orange county festively decorated for the holidays.  Tour participants can gain many home and holiday decorating ideas, and meet with local artists offering their art for sale.

This is ALCV’s major fund raiser of the year.  Proceeds go to help fund four philanthropies which benefit needy children in the Capistrano Unified School District and at Camp Pendleton.

ALCV volunteers are on hand during the tours, serving as docents, explaining interesting facts and features about the homes. Businesses can support the program by paying to advertise inside the homes or in their yards, or by providing directional signs, promotional materials, etc. and by sponsorships.

Assistance League of Capistrano Valley is a nonprofit volunteer organization whose members are dedicated to developing and implementing programs to provide humanitarian services in the community. Founded in 1977, its volunteers support the students in the elementary and middle schools within the Capistrano Unified School District in south Orange County. In a joint project with other local Assistance League chapters, they also support families on the Camp Pendleton Marine Base.

ALCV serves the communities of Aliso Viejo, Capistrano Beach, Coto de Caza, Dana Point, Ladera Ranch, Laguna Niguel, Las Flores, Mission Viejo, Rancho Santa Margarita, San Clemente and San Juan Capistrano.

During the school year 2006-2007, ALCV volunteers touched the lives of over 23,000 children through four philanthropies: Operation School Bell®, Kids On The Block™, Links to Learning and the Hands on Literacy Program.

For more Christmas Home Tour information, or to get on the ticket waiting list contact:  Cindy Rigas or Caree Miller (949) 291-8408.  Tickets will cost $25.00 until November 15th, after that, $30.00. They can also be bought the day of the tour at any of the featured homes.
